BarFly's Review of Twilight Cafe & Bar
Once a bright light on the Southeast punk/rock map, the Twilight suffered a sharp decline, as multiple ownership changes, and misguided remodels (Who takes out a vintage 50s horseshoe bar?! Who paints over Bobby Madness murals?! Infidels!) gutted the place.
Soul stolen, crowds and regulars long departed, it's poised now for big comeback - the owners of our beloved Speakeasy purchased it at the end of 2013, and pledged to bring it back to its glory days.
Hosts mostly local bands of good repute, Thursday-Saturday nights (cover usually under $5).
Open mic 7:30pm Tuesdays.
TV x 4.
$2 well, $1 off all draughts, $1.50-3 menu, 3-6pm, Monday-Friday.
Mondays: Jedediah's FHAN Club: Facial Hair Appreciation Night with two-for-one drinks for "beardos," 6pm-2am.

Wow! This is one place I will NEVER be returning to again! I overheard some short, little Asian guy (presumably the owner) berating his employees and talking about how "lazy Americans" are. I was so offended I got up and walked out. The twilight use to be my favorite dive bar with a kickass breakfast menu. I had heard rumors about how the new owner had decimated the place, so I had to check it out for myself. Decimated doesnt even begin to explain what he's done. Menu sucks, ambiance has tanked!
In addition to the new $4 Breakfast Special menu, some of the old favorite menu items are back! Haystack, Walking Burrito, Breakfast Sandwhich, Scrambles, Hashbrowns AND Tater Tots!!!
Went to twighlight earlier today for a late breakfast with specific menu items in mind. We hadn't been there in a while and found that ownership changed about a month ago. Not only are they completely remodeling the building to remove the cool old school u-shaped bar, but they also completely changed the food menu removing some of the best items. They're now using cheaper lower quality ingredients. My boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast and the menu didn't come with eggs. We (and the bartenders) thought that must be a mistake so they went ahead and added it to his meal. One of the bartenders called the owner to question that and she was told it's not on the menu so its not included. The chicken fried steak was terrible and the 'mojo potatoes' were raw. I ordered a BBQ burger with cheddar. They used american cheese and forgot the bacon. We were so hungry we went ahead and ate without sending it back. But when we voiced our opinions to one of the bartenders she apologized but ultimately did nothing about it. The staff was also lacking in basic bartending skills.
Twighlight used to have good food and good bartenders. The new ownership has really made some poor choices here and I really hope that they realize that. Otherwise this is going to go under pretty quickly.
This place ROCKS! It is by far the place to hang! Albeit a bit difficult to find if you don't know it's there....the food & service is simply amazing! Where else in SE can you find cheap, made to order breakfast served all day? The staff is over the top friendly and they have live music to boot! This makes The Twilight Cafe the most unique restaruant/venue in Portland!!!! I LOVE THIS BAR
Well I first went to Twilight for lunch b/c it's located near my work. I went with a bunch of co-workers and we had a good time. After work we all went back got some drinks. They have really good prices and a cool atmosphere. The owners were so happy that we brought in a large group that they hooked us up with Jello Shots. Now we are all hooked on this place! Many good nights at Twilight. :)
Awww. Come on. Give the Twilight a chance. We are new owners who took over in Jan. 08 and the place is now the best. The food a beyond good, the servings are huge, and the prices are affordable. We still have great Bloody Mary's but we now also have our own garlic pepper vodka to make them even better. Bad food in the past? It won't happen again. Come on back and give us another try.
Glad to see the Twilight is booking bands again, still with the free door and cheap beer. I don't eat there, so I can't tell you about bit*hing about the food, but they have rock and beer to match your budget.
Just not the same since new ownership. Used to go there 2x week at least but not anymore. Decided to give them a try again today only to have rotten bacon--disgusting! They used to have the best breakfasts and bloddy marys in town---miss the old staff and cooks.
The Aventines and Night Slaves just played there. Think they're making a grand comeback thanks to Zach the tunes dude and his marvelous sound system--a pleasure.
So as of June/July the Twilight has new ownership. Unfortunately, things have really gone downhill. I used to go here twice a week for the great food and bloody mary's and the most delicious bacon I've ever had. I've gone twice since the ownership change and the bacon was undercooked and tasted totally rotten. They used to play some pretty cool offbeat music on the speakers overhead but now the only music I can hear is the cooks in the back. The only break in the canned kitchen music is the rancorous and annoying laughter of the new serving staff. Polite enough but the older lady really belongs in a greasy spoon. What character this place had has been lost to blandness. Hopefully they will work out the kinks in a few months. Until then I'm not going back.
The food is great. The people who work there are really nice. I would recommend going there for the food alone. The location is very easy to get to and I live in the neighborhood and I do not feel that is it that bad of a neighborhood. TRY IT SOMETIME.
Due to complaints from the billiards place next door, the owners of the Twilight took out the stage and they now have some games and free pool. Good drink specials, the breakfasts are great, and they have a smokin hot new bartender.
Half empty, smokey. It doesn't even have regulars. Why? The bands have to bring people or there will be nobody there. Bad neighborhood. Lock your car I lost $660.00 in gear. You won't see me there. Good burger though.
went there on a tuesday. poor dj kid didn't seem to know how to beat match to save his life, but he did play a few good songs. the place wasn't exactly bumpin. but maybe on other nights ...
