BarFly's Review of SoLo (CLOSED)
Closed! For posterity, here is our review for posterity:
Look, it's on the SOuth-side of LOvejoy. How incredibly cute is that? Since SoBu and NoLo and NoPo and PoFo and SoWa get their own NYNYish names, let's re-brand this block and have a cleverly named bar.
This uber-Pearl tri-level establishment is located sort of below, sort of above, and on the same floor as an Office Max, which makes it handy for having a cocktail after you are done purchasing dry erase boards for your next urban renewal meeting.
All of the design elements fit into place: brushed metal, soft lighting, chrome, and rich dark woods, and frighteningly frightening Pearlites. Delightful staff, save your visit for weekdays to avoid the B&T crowd on the weekends.

I miss all the old guys and gals that i had the pleasure of meeting and working with there when the place first opened. I think I speak for most of the original staff when I say that what SOLO became was the last thing we all wanted it to be. And as one the first bartenders there I hate to say it, no wait I love to say it, I told you so. The upstairs tacky disco-disco overpriced crap was not a good idea. The Pearl, for that matter Portland, did not need a super-douched out place like what S0LO ended up like. Oh well.
Can it be true? I think they shut Solo down! Hurray!! I don't know who the irresponsible ball sack owner of this place is, but he was originally a good responsible neighbor earning a fair profit. Yet he soon let us all down and turned it into a mega-club destination point for unimaginative testosterone encumbered 23 year old dudes wearing silly ass diagonal striped shirts and true religion jeans. Glad to see the party move elsewhere.
what a depressing shit hole.
wanna be vegas plastic creepy coked out bridge and tunnel at it's worst.
see this site for a view of the idiots that reside inside:
most of them should be on this website except most of the 'chicks' are really that 'hot' unless your into 'those' kinda girls:
I guess the these douchbags from h2o and voodoo and the like gotta go somewhere, keeps them outta the REAL Portland bars.
they gotta learn somewhere i suppose.
As an ex employee at SoLo in the good old days when the upstairs consisted of The Den only and the now "club" was a vacant storage area, I feel a sense of sadness whenever I drive by and see the monstrosity that now stands. I have only been in for a brief moment to say hello to some old friends that still worked there and a tear almost came to my eye when I saw all the doucebags of Old Town (aka Barracuda, McFaddens, and Voodoo) had migrated into The Pearl. All the characteristics of a shabbily thrown together bar, plastic dixie cups holding overpriced libations, and the tell tale cookie cutter hip hop remixed thumping my cerebellum. I was in and out before I knew it and as a fan of nostalgia I was thrown back to the days of chill music, carefully crafted cocktails, made by yours truly ;-) and finally and most critical, good people. SoLo was probabily my most loved bar I have worked at and I am sad the owner has gone Dr. Frankenstein on his once coveted and respected establishment. So all of you that feel the way I do make it known that we will not tolerate this kind of fake, contrite, just down right nasty establishment exist in The Pearl. To quote Frampton..."If you feel like I do" make it known and lets bring back the SoLo of yesteryear.
Cheers, The Ex-Tender
so i hate clubs... with a passion! i got invited to this shitty ass attempt of a cool bar by some new acquaintances of mine, in hopes of actually having a good time.. I'm a chauvinistic asshole and these acquaintances were very hot itty bitty Asian spinners. so you can imagine just how horrible of a time i had because i chose to leave these beauties behind, just so i could run out of this bar like a very fast retard on fire. i don't wear collar shirts... in my opinion all polo shirts or oxfords should be shat on a and burned. this place makes you wear one... fuckers! when i came in i went through the back door and up the elevator with the club manager, no cover. I'm kinda a big deal. immediately after i ordered my $7 well drink, this asshole came up to me with some shit coming out of his ear that made him look like an ugly ass wannabe secret service, told me... and i quote this verbatim. "you need to take your hat of now!.. if i have to ask you again i will take your hat... if i ask you a third time i will throw you the fuck out" I hate this place... later today when i drink my hangover away i am going to throw a brick through their windows.
$20 bucks to get in, long ass line, stuck up girls, watered down drinks, bartenders ASK for a tip and get pissed off if you actually want your change. This makes the Greek look good.
Went Saturday- these supposed hipper than thou clubs never live up to the hype. The only reason I had fun was because I was with a great group of friends. I sincerely get bored at these places within minutes- I just don't understand the draw, especially having to pay 20.00 to get in. The music is the usual unimaginative hip-hop remixes and the crowd was the usual pretentious unapproachable types. I often wonder why half of the people who go to these places are even in there. Explain to me the amount of denial half of the women are in at this place, dragging their mediocre boyfriends in or busting through the dance floor without any common courtesy. One thing I notice is that all the men are actually the respectable ones who say excuse me if they bump into you. I guess that means I'm getting old or something.
i've been going here every saturday since like november 2007 and just wanted to say a few things i thought people should know...they don't start charging cover til like 8:30 or 9pm on the weekends and the line doesnt get insane until like 10-10:30 so if you want to go early to eat you wont have to pay cover or wait hours in line. also there is a door that goes straight into the downstairs restaurant area..it's on the street level by the trolley stop and during club hours you can pay $5 extra dollars to go in that door and not wait in the lines above.
Waited for two hours in line, in cold and rain watching other people walk up and bribe bouncers.
They force you to line up under their second floor balcony, while people who are actually on the balcony smoke and drop their ashes and sparks on you.
Finally left disgusted.
I will NEVER go to this club again!
A couple buddies I go barring it up with regularly checked this place out last weekend. First time I'd been there since they opened the club part, but I'd been there before when it was just a chill spot. They were having a "white" party or something.
-$25 per person. Wow, when did this turn into Vegas or LA? Not buying this one...if I'm paying more than $10 cover in Portland I'm already not that happy.
-1 bathroom with 3 toilets in the whole place, so you're standing in line for 15-20 minutes just to use the pisser at certain times. If you go to the downstairs bathrooms they make you wait in line, again, so dont get any clever ideas.
-Pretty fast service for drinks. Nothing worse than waiting forever for a fucking drink. 2 bars upstairs in the club section and about a 5 minute or less wait for drinks. Not bad.
-No smoking inside which is nice. You're free to get your nicotine buzz out on the balcony though. You come home smelling much nicer than if you went to say, Dixies. Much easier to strike up a convo with someone interesting outside on the balcony also.
This could be a really cool place but has some tragic flaws. Maybe once the buzz dies down it will go back to being an okay place to hang, but for now I'm not interested in going back.
Ha ha ha Bob. I translated your letter into spanish, then translate it back. Here is what it reads to me: ====================== Become fond of promoters Although I have decided that I absolutely scorn all clubs (I will explain) who still respond to an intention, specially in the suitable company and if he means to clear of her some strange histories. Hotspot last is solo in per it Distric. I have been going to eat there in the side of the restaurant before. I do not know which are on these clubs congested, pretentious, but they crack to me upon. I am going on the Web site to try to discover when the side of the club is opened of course, no information I pay attention (now the aureole of this magical place I captivate the mystery to me and that will change my life). So east shipment email the Saturday last to old the Owner/Promoter/some club 25 years punky-ass of Tigard that passes the money of the fiduciary fund of its papa in the investment in healthy models, stable of the business. Subject: Supper in the single one (that tries to make reference that it wanted to eat the supper beforehand and later to enter the club there) I can arrive how early Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and which is the load of cover in every night? Thanks, Bob
Although I've decided I absolutely despise all clubs (I'll explain) they still serve a purpose, especially in the right company and if it means taking away from it some outlandish stories.
The latest hotspot is SoLo in the Pearl Distric. I've gone there to eat on the restaurant side before.
I don't know what it is about these stuffy, pretentious clubs, but they crack me up.
I go onto the website to try to find out when the club side opens- of course, no information is posted (Now I'm intrigued by the mystery and aura of this magical place that will change my life).
So I send this email last Saturday to the Club Owner/Promoter/some 25 year old punk-ass from Tigard who spends his Dad's trust fund money on investing in sound, stable business models. Subject: Dinner at SoLo (Trying to hint that I would like to eat dinner there beforehand and then go into the club)
How early can I arrive on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and what is the cover charge on each night?
Sunday afternoon, (Hey dude, I was set to go into your club and spend money Saturday night but you didn't bother checking and responding to your email until Sunday- way to gauge potential customers who may help your bottom line) he responds with this email:
Subject: RE: Dinner at SoLo Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2008 19:23:26 +00
"I'm not really understanding your email. I only promote on Saturdays at Solo and the cover charge is anywhere from 10 to 20 dollars for guys."
I don't GET clubs. NEVER have. They're target demographic is fucking retards (Go ahead admin, hit the report button).
So you're telling me that if I want to go to your establishment at 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday with some friends, eat a steak, throw down a couple Mirror Ponds, that you're going to make me stand outside Office Depot in the funneling wind for two hours, building with anticipation, so that I can get inside and stand on the wall by the bathroom and stare at a bunch of hoochie-mamas who are even turning down drink offers from the Outrageous Audio Guy? Not happening.
I'm the invisible real VIP, unlike the knuckleheads you let through the turnstiles.
With this kind of business model, Chris Rock has got to be rolling over in his proverbial "Grand opening, grand closing". Good luck Club Office Depot.
You can't self-proclaim yourself to be a legend from 2000 to 2002. That's not how it works. Besides, scoring with single moms from the bridge and tunnel crowd doesn't count.
I went down on a Thursday night to check out Solo for the first time. Showed up around 10:30pm and the line was already down the block. Spent about 30 minutes in line and payed a $20 cover to get in. They have a lot of small bars setup around the main room so you can get a drink pretty quick. Not sure but I think it's a non-smoking club. This place has a very large dance floor with lots of room to dance. Lasers shooting out over the crowd for a pretty cool effect. Payed $7.00 for a jack and coke which came in a small plastic cup, Not cool. I then switch to just drinking beer.
If your looking for that really cool large nightclub experience, this is the only place to go to right now. Just Plan on dropping $50-$100 for a night of fun.
I decided to check out this fine establishment and I was not disappointed - admittedly I didn't have very high expectations so they were easily met. This is an uber-hip downtown nightclub, what else is there to say. The drinks are on the expensive but not the worst around. In the underground part our waitress was abysmal and the menu had items that weren't available. The upper floor had a good dance floor and played a weird (but neat) variety of music. The Halloween party was pretty cool, it was basically a skimpy costume contest. On all three nights the place was at capacity and doing the ol' one-in-one-out entry method. I don't understand why there are just as many people in the "VIP" line as there are in the normal line. There must be a lot of important people in PDX. I probably won't go back to the underground bar, but my gf likes to drag me out dancing so I suppose we'll go back upstairs. Also, when the line is bad, know that they don't pay the bouncers very well.
I was a legend in P-town between 2000 and 2002 when I lived there and partied hard. I had VIP at all the clubs, and Bar 71 was like a second home. I can't even remember how many awesome nights started out in Bar 71 and even the rat-fact-ory or Copper Penny. I returned to Portland a few weeks ago, and I gotta say I was dissapointed. No Bar 71, No Fernando's, No Panorama. The Greek Cuisina was the only place that was a little okay---but all the sleazy, easy girls are nowhere to be found. We even went to our beloved Re-infect-me (refectory) and the scene had changed---where are all the single mom's from Gresham?? In hibernation? But we ended up at Club SOLO on Saturday and it was a friggin blast. I felt like I was in Vegas. We paid $40 each to get in which was alright since there was an hour line up. There were so many girls and the music kicked ass. I even ran into a few easy single mom's to dance with---felt like a stallion again. Thank you Solo for helping me re-live the past, and thank you women of portland for being so down to earth and approachable. Meow.
Someone needs to tell the promoters and staff that they work at a bar in PORTLAND and not L.A. They treat everyone like they are "lesser" people. It's rediculous. They have 3 bars that are so small that it takes forever to get a drink. If you enjoy this, standing in a line for over an hour, paying $20 for horrible service and watered down drinks then you should go. Also, for girls that are classy, DO NOT GO HERE. I felt like I should be wearing clothes with coverage equivalent to a bikini, overdone MAC makeup, and had my hair done professionally to fit in.
okay, i had no idea this place even existed before a few months ago but now that it is a night club i love it. there is tons of room to dance, i'm not bumping to people every time i turn and the music is pretty good. the only cons are that there is really no seating unless you have a VIP section or you go outside and if you don't get there by, like, 10 pm you better expect to wait in a ridiculously long line and pay cover up to $20.
This has turned into one of those over-pretentious snobby joints in the Pearl. They seemed ok awhile back but now the staff is arrogant and very rude. They won't be seeing me again!
Astounding sci-fi decor. Lonely office boys eating their dinners all alone at the bar. Lights in the floor; my glass is empty, lets head to Slabtown.
This used to be a standard happy hour for us because of my friends love of their bloody mary and salmon mac. The third time they were out of bloody mary mix and we haven't been back since. Still a good place to go when you want to chill out with friends after work. The drinks are good but I still prefer brazen bean.
We went there this past Friday night, after hitting up bridgeport, we went over to Solo and it was horrible, they have a drink list with drinks on it they are no longer serving, nice how about printing some new ones...We ordered food, which tasted awful, was the smallest I have ever seen and was soooo over priced it was stupid. The drinks are super expensive and the server was rude. I hated this place and wouldnt tell anyone to go there.
I visited Solo with my husband & best friend on a cold summer night. I was a little disappointed when there wasn't any live music on deck due to the fact that was what we were seaking. The service was fine until I paid. The waitress took my money, never gave me the change, and proceeded to disappear for 15 minutes. While I was waiting, I started getting really pissed because in my opinion, that is an incredibly rude thing to do. It's up to the patron to decide the amount they're going to tip; not the waitress!!! It wasn't even the amount that mattered. Simply the fact that she thought she'd decide what tip she deserved. I always give at least a 15% tip & was shocked she had the audacity to keep my money. I waited until she surfaced, asked her for my change & left! My friend & husband was mortified that I was offended. I want to know if this is common practice or what? It's bullshit!
yes. There are some perks while using the restroom at SoLo, besides the obvious. There is a t.v. monitor that shows the coming and goings of pretty lengerie ladies and hip shirt guys. While you pee. or whatever.
