BarFly's Review of Moonstar
In Portland, where talk of eclectic crowds generally implies differently-costumed bunches of the same post-grad white boys, a genuine diversity of regulars fills the Moonstar.
The young lovelies to frequent the weekend DJ nights don't seem to mind the ever-present harsher elements (or maybe that explain the superfluous bathrooms), and the friendly servers and low cocktail/micro prices are enjoyed by all round the circular bar.

Moonstar is the spot. I dont go to too many other places :) The atmosphere and people are usually good. I always have a great time kiccn it wit my girls when i go!!
Looks like u need to get ur dog in check. Cut his fuckin nuts if need be. Don't blame the bar, blame the married sob that feels the need to stray, then fucking dump his ass, come hang out w us girls over there, and find u a REAL MAN. ;)
I wandered in here during happy hour once. Sat at the bar for maybe ten minutes, no one offered to serve me, couldn't catch the bartenders eye. No, it was not busy, there were maybe three people in there. So I left. I wouldn't go here.
Okay, so was led to this bar from this site because I chose dancing. I'm from Eastern Washington so figured we could just take a cab from our room and then kick it the rest of the night. Myself and my friends are dressed like were going dancing. Guess what? This is not a dance club. It's a pool bar. The crowd, the color, all of that was totally fine with me. But can you just imagine, showing up in dancing clothes, and getting dropped off by a cab at a pool bar? The people inside were helpful to tell us another place that would better suit our plans. But just in case this still comes up as a dancing place, it is not.
Some of you seem to think that a diverse croud is a negative attribute to a bar. I however, grew up in cities that unlike Portland, were not 75% caucasion. That said, I personally find the mixed crowd at Moonstar to be very refreshing. Too many Portland bars are dominated by one croud. You know who I am talking about. The young, white and angry, too cool for you, I'm over everything, Portland hipster croud. Nothing kills a good buzz like being surronded by those people. That is not the case at Moonstar. On any given night you will find the young and the old, punk rockers, gangstas, pool sharks, whites, and blacks then some all under the same roof sipping drinks, nodding along with the big beat pumping out of the big speakers on the ceiling. For the most part everyone gets along just fine. The bartenders usually serve up nice sized drinks, and they have Racoon Lodge Blond on tap along with a couple other micros. $1.50 PBR pints during happy hour.
Usually, I hang around Downtown on St. Paddy's. Strangely enough, I thought going to the hood would be nice for a different experience. Oh boy it sure was. I didn't think black folks celebrated St. Paddy's so seriously. Once going in, I noticed the girls where all dressed in slinky outfits (which I totally support), but the crowd was almost 100% black. Feeling like an outsider, a group of women took me in, probably feeling my situation. They started making me feel right at home. After about 3 hours, two of the five girls took me home, because I was drunk. And the only bad thing I can say is, they rolled me for my .......sperm. For us guys who are single or not so single, it's the place for girllie hunting. My first time there worked like a lucky charm.(TRICKS are for kids)
Come into the Moon Star for the Hot Ass Black Cuties. Most of them are finger lickin good. It's kinda of a Baller Bar with nice ass luxury cars in the parking lot. I'm not a proud owner of a great car. But who cares, If my bitch is rollin high , I will roll high with her.
i am a lesbian and a white girl...and love the place! on the right nights, it's very gay friendly and chill.
"A bunch of black guys hitting on all the girls." "the black guys there stole my cigarettes." Sooo, exactly how many black guys stole your cigarettes? What is up with this does it matter that these men are black? Moonstar is in the inner city that is where most of the black community lives Duh. Stop Trippin, this place is cool any bar you go to you will find hounds black, white, hispanic, ect. Long as you respect yourself enjoy the "dranks" mind your own business it is a nice place to chill. When you closed minded about stupid stuff like color of the people in the club you got a personal problem to star with, ya know.
I too felt uncomfortable there. I am not a Lesbian, but no means no. And when the bartenders just let these guys harrass the women right in front of them with out saying a word, it irks me. In fact one of the black guys there stole my cigarettes. I made him give them back right in front of the bartender and what does he do? Serves him another drink!!!! The guy was way too loaded to begin with! I will not go back. Too many other friendly bars to go to in NoPo
The moonstar is just fine, unless you need to be surrounded by people just like yourself when in public. Yeah, some nights they do have a cover for a guest dj, but it's only like 2 dollars. And there are some ballers on any given night, I even seen a rolls, but there are also a whole gamut of local folks. They have a full on kitchen and specials, which I cannot vouch for or denounce. Look, I enjoy the moonstar for a good drink and some pool. If you need more try the Egyptian Room or the Red Sea.
This is a ho hangout that my man feels he needs to be around every time he is in Portland. Don't see what is so great about this dump!
