I love the Mocks. This is the only bar in the neighborhood that's lacking both annoying hipsters/kids and scumbags. I like the down home feel and the bartenders never forget my name, even though I only show up twice a month or so. Always a pleasure, never a hassle. Thanks mocks!
Drinking anywhere else in Portland is just wrong.....There are some exquisite bands and hell its around the corner. I love the Free Wi-FI for my I-Pod Touch
New Management? Used to be a comfortable spot for few beers. Whats with the loud heavey metal music? No thanks. Wont be back.
Mock Crest Tavern is my favorite hang out in Portland.
Drinks are reasonably priced and they have some great happy hour deals. While this place is known as a dive the bartenders will make you whatever you ask for and are always happy to suggest drinks or recommend beers if you want to try something new.
Food prices are steep but the menu is a class above regular "bar food". Another bonus is that the whole menu is available until closing. Definitely try the burgers and fries (which are cut in-house). The hummus plate is also spectacular.
The atmosphere here is great and welcoming to all types. A few of the bartenders have an attitude problem but most of them are very friendly - and regardless, they all provide excellent table service, definitely a rarity in this town!
They feature Stumptown poker two nights a week and live music several nights a week, plus there's never a cover charge. There are some popular acts that return once a month and draw quite a following but smaller blues artists also get their chance to play, and anyone can get their 15 minutes of fame on Thursday Open Mic nights, hosted by one of the regular artists.
A few other notes: They no longer have pool, but do have a computer available for your use and free wi-fi access if you bring your laptop. The beer garden out back is not to be missed in the summertime.
Mock Crest is the epitome of North Portlands conversion from blue collar to 20/30's who found a reasonable house 5 minutes from downtown and now fill this cozy little bar. Food is great, but the vibe is the reason to come. Although tater tots at 2am bring me there in the wee hours....
I used to love the Mock. Perhaps I got to know people there too well, because my affections have waned. The food is for the most part, really bad and overpriced. Friendly staff not so much anymore, more attitudes, really. But maybe it's me.
This place is pretty cramped, but the food is awesome! The downside to the food however, is that it's so greasy that you sober up too quickly.
The "Mock" needs a fresher review, so here goes. I recently moved to Portland and checked out the Mock after seeing that it had live blues 5 nights/week. This is the friendliest bar I've personally ever been in. The staff are all kind, friendly, funny and efficient. They all do everything - bartend, cook (the kitchen is in the bar!), wait tables inside and on the patio. Update: The happy hour is from 3pm til 6pm, not 3:30pm. There's early music start times on Sunday (7pm) and Tuesday (8pm), which I appreciate. Some of the groups are pure blues, some more folk/blues and some are just good-fun jam sessions. The musicians manage to squeeze into the front corner, and it works fine; just adds to the cozy ambience. Despite the small in-bar kitchen, they do a great job on their entire menu. They make a killer Gyros and a house favorite blue-cheese burger or chicken sandwich. Daily main and appetizer specials, beer specials, about 10 local brews on-tap. On weekends, there's a 2.99 sausage/egg/pancake breakfast special you can't beat. Several of the bartenders are good musicians too, but they are as humble as they are talented. The barstools are old round attached-to-the floor jobs, but perfectly spaced, so actually better than free-standing. They have three laptops you can borrow from the bar (fast wi-fi), and a customer imac in a cozy nook with a litle antique lamp. The deck and garden are great, and they really have a well maintained flower garden (at least it was until the weather changed). I've checked out a few other places but it's hard to bother when all my needs are met here. Great conversational patrons, and I've met a some very nice ladies there who enjoy the non-meat-market atmosphere. There you go - updated to november '07, and honest to boot.
I grew up in Portland, never bin here. What a great place. As a confirmed alcoholic who only drinks PBR, I appreciated the good prices friendly hosts and great grub. Highly recommend all other members of AA.
Mock Crest is to North PDX working class folk that Goodfoot is to SE hippies...but this is a place where you may see a little bit of every thing - in other words it's a perfect fit for alot of different populations. Good service, fun people and good bar food. The only complaint I have is that people tend to get REALLY loud outside in the beer garden, and this is a neighborhood bar with apartments and houses next door and right behind it. So fer gawds sake try to keep your cake holes quiet if you're outside ! If it gets too noisy the staff shuts it down and there is nowhere to sit inside after dark. I really like Thursday open mike night. Lots of guys from Widmer and White Eagle jammin and its always a good time.
Flying in from Tampa Fl I anticipated seeing Rollie Tussing III at the Crest. The Staff was Fantastic. Rollie was superb. I highly recommend both to anyone listening. The micro brew, Mills Pond, excellent. Wish it all was here in Tampa. I would have to rent a table and probably wait a table or two to pay for it all. Good time, great music, scrumptious burgers. Yeah,...... I could live in the bar. Thank-you for the memories. Ken
Love the service and the smiling staff. We love how close to home it is and we've never had a bad experience here. Great service- the regulars are very regular, so if you want to join in on the fun, you need to get there early to get a good spot. I'd say the drinks are stiff enough to do the trick. Tip them well and you too shall receive! I highly recommend the Sampler Platter or the Tuna Casserole.
I was a Mock's Crest virgin until yesterday. I like it! Tater Tots...Yummy to my tummy. Good wine selection for a dive. I tried liquor wine and beer and had a helluva headache the next morning for my long drive to Seattle (& back). But thanks anyway guys, it was fun. hey by the way GO TO MOCK CREST! It is a fun *charming* hangout ;) Are you guys on Myspace? Couldn't find you.
wifi - hurrah! tatertots! - hurrah! happy hour + late night specials for both foodstuffs and liquorstuffs - hurrah! this place has it all, AND you get the most fabulous sideshow of locals/regulars. sweet!
With all the dives and restaurants with "lounges" along North Lombard, this is the one that's way above the rest. The staff is great, the clientele aren't scary (well, most of them), the food is even good. And in the summer, that back patio is a sweet little slice of heaven. I give Mock Crest Tavern a thumbs up.
dude , this place is great . i'm a total drunk and when i'm at a bar that is far from home and i'm drunk i can drive to the mock crest and then drink more cause it's closer to my house and i need to drink most of the time . i'm drunk .
