The Lutz my Refuge

None of the previous comments about The Lutz grasp how special this place is. Woodstock neighborhood is home to multiple sports bars and a sausage factory. Seriously there is literally a sausage factory down the street from the Lutz. It's called Otto's and you should have lunch their sometime. Delicious!

Most of the bars in the hood cater to the hordes of 30 something, former frat-boy, college football watching, assholes. This particular flavor of frat-boy represents the vanguard of gentrification and must be fought. These dangerous customers, travel in packs, don't tip, have ugly wives and play golf. Need I say more?

Amidst all of this The Lutz stands out as the one refuge for scoundrels in the whole neighborhood. As the only true proletarian bar in the Woodstock neighborhood their "yes we put Peanut Butter and BBQ sauce on your cheeseburger" attitude results in an amazing drunken feast and an incredibly liberating environment. All are welcomed into the Lutz's whiskey drenched loving embrace. Blue collar workers, college students, the out of work, union members and communists all raise their glass at The Lutz.

The Workers of the Lutz are embattled against all that is evil in this world. Like the X-Men the Bartenders and Cooks of The Lutz stand strong against the onslaught of evil and douchebaggery and promise to protect Woodstock's one true neighborhood bar against all foes who aim to tear it down.

Seriously though, this bar is a great place in a great neighborhood. The Bartenders work hard to create an environment that appeals to readies, old drunks and those of us with more refined tastes.

Go here, Order the Brokeback Burger and enjoy a nice IPA.

Lutz is not a Sports Bar

The reason the Lutz staff didn't turn up the game for you is that there are TWO SPORTS BARS on Woodstock where you can hoot and holler to your heart's content and not annoy the rest of us 'game-haters'..

If you want sports, go to a place that caters to that exact thing, or shut your trap.

The New Lutz is a nice, dark, reasonably priced, dive-alike bar. If you hate sports, you'll really like it.

went there with seven friends to watch the civil war, the bartender was quick to inform us that this is not a sports bar, and would not turn the game up, several more game fans came in and I asked if we could listen to the game instead of the obnoxious rap, again, even though there were only two people (her friends) not watching the game, she refused. from that point on she neglected service, and seemed to enjoy the power to deny giving the customers what they wanted. when i walked in i was shocked to see the bar empty, when every bar in town was overflowing, after spending ten minutes it was painfully clear! the bar has decent atmosphere, and ok food, lose the bartender and attitude and you masy be surprised at your increase in business!

Great bar!

It's a great dive bar with tasty wings and heavily boozed up drinks. Also, Angela the bartender is very sexy.

Lutz of Love

I really like the Lutz. You cant help but feel youre standing in a place with some history behind it. Theyve done a great job of emphasizing the original streamlined layout by stripping away anything that remotely belongs to the 21st century (digital jukebox and a single HDTV are the only exceptions). The bar is at least 20 stools long, maybe more. The pale blue formica counter top looks original, red leather booths too. Sparsely placed throughout are '60's and '70's breweriana. Some of the stuff is from brands long defunct and I think that speaks to the genre of the place youre sitting in; an era revived. Anyhow, enough on that. Let get to practicalities; Booze. Liquor selection is pretty standard, with a small crush on Bourbon (Black Maple Hill?! Hello!). Pleasantly, I noticed a complete absence of bottles of the 'spring break' variety. By this I mean; no Peachtree, no Apple Pucker, no Buttershots. In fact; there are no Schnapps of any kind. Though they obviously didnt want an all out war, because I did spy a bottle of Jagermeister back there. So they did throw the kids at least one bone. The Lutz definitely does not seem interested in being a college sports bar (there are all ready a couple of those across the street). It seems to be a neighborhood place with emphasis on conversation and cocktails. Not that there are any shortages on the Beer front. 8 on tap, with the only swill being the aforementioned Hamms. No Budweiser of any kind means room for other brews, and I like it. 5 different $2 Tallboys and a nice variety of bottles means that only a clown couldnt be happy here. The Cocktails I had were all plenty strong and my 'reprise from Whiskey' Beer was crisp and cool. No complaints on that end. Service was very good. Especially for an opening night, Nicole (our bartender) is obviously a vet of some other good fight, and kept us happy throughout. I decided to come back last night with my wife for dinner. Place was much more mellow this time around. Different bartender, same strong drinks. I figured the Lutz Burger ($7) would be the way to go. My 'Lettuce and Cheese only, Sauce on the side' made it up through the chain of command just fine. All in all; a better than most bar burger. Obviously no frozen meat from a box is used here. Im guessing this guy was a 1/3 pounder. Stout Bun and a plethora of Cheese and shredded Lettuce. Fistfull of Shoestring Fries didnt leave me feeling like I ate a pound of deep fried artery killers, which was a kind deception on their part. Mrs. McStyles had the Knuckle Sandwich, which is clever code for what is commonly referred to as a Club. I kind of Guffawed at the $9 price tag, but once it came out and I realized that it was really 2 meals in one, I simmered down. It tasted like good times were comin. The Sourdough (from Portland French Bakery, I came to learn) and house smoked Meats left nothing to question, except how we were going to finish the damn thing. Onion Rings might be house made, might not be. Whatever they are, they were mighty fine. So yes, as I said earlier, I really dig The Lutz. It comes across as a place where adults can come to converse without playing second fiddle to 'the game'. Yet, it doesnt look down on the simple bar room pleasures like a game of pool or pinball either. The place is pretty dimly lit and I think that fosters a tranquil vibe over the proceedings, even when the jukebox is screaming headlong into the night. I didnt mention the patio out back because I dont smoke, but there you go; it there for the taking. Yes, The Lutz is a treasure certainly worth checking out; as traditions are sometimes meant to be reborn.

Sucks, terrible bar

Didn't get waited on for ten minutes. The bartender wiped the counters and cleaned for ten minutes while looking at me as if I didn't belong there. They got my order wrong twice. Service sucks. Bad vibe. bad place

What goes around

I had been here probably 5 times before I realized there was a corner booth immediately to the right as you walk in the front door. At the back corner booth, a girl told me she likes to sleep with girls, and I should just accept it. I almost spit out my High Life in amazement. Who has a problem with that?

some of you are dumb.

ok, first off, the fact that slaytanic wasn't even aware of the "z" in lutz speaks volumes for their understanding of the bar as a whole. second, you have to learn to jive with the place. no, you don't go there for amazing service (although, ahem, perhaps some of us do) you go there to bathe in pink neon light, get drunk on pbr and mingle with the sketchtastic characters that frequent the place. the bartenders are great once you actually start talking to them. it's a scene. it's a good scene. you just have to get into it.

on a brewski at the lutzki

In a well-lit and amiable atmosphere it is almost difficult to not make friends here, be it with bartenders or fellow bar patrons. The beer is cheap and cold and after only a few, it tends to feel like home. Be willing to accept the Lutz and it will envelop you in its warm hug of tender drunkenness. When nothing will console me but an icy blue ribbon there's only one place that satisfies the soul--down beside that pink neon light. Oh Lutz, don't ever change.

Lutz is Good

OK, listen first time drinkers and just-moved-to-Portland-to-be-an-artist-but-I-think-I'm-a-working-class- anarchist: I know you like to think you're poor even though you're not, there's a certain glamour to being down and out when you're a struggling musician working a day job. So you drink cheap shitty beer at places like the Lutz and don't tip so that the bartenders treat you like shit and you can go on feeling like the everyone hates you and the world owes you. Not very smart! Do us a favor and kill yourself! The Lutz rocks. It has been a staple of Reedies, meth-heads and working class douchebags for 50 years and will continue to be for another 50 as long as you and your suicide sorority sisters stay away. Go to Putters where they want you.

What??!

These people are idiots. I have been going to the Lutz for about 2 years now, ever since I moved into the 'hood. It's a great place to hang out; cheap and laid back. Personally I think the bartenders are cool. The bartenders are not ASSHOLES. Maybe they were ignoring you cuz you are a stupid, fat, smelly, cheap asshole yourself. Did you ever think about that?

Cheap Pabst...

...is the only reason to go here. The 2 bartenders who worked ignored everything but each other and their food...and the fat ass chick didn't need anymore to eat...and the guy stunk like he'd never heard of soap. You'd think with 2 people working they could stop making puppy faces at each other and serve customers...not.
