BarFly's Review of Hedge House
’Tis a house, actually, a cozy Craftsman bungalow featuring wooden booths within, an ever-expanding deck area out back, and a porch for the Laurelthirst’s grungy long-hairs to sun themselves those rare occasions they’ll accept recorded bluegrass.
Kids? Check. Dogs? Check. Bike rack? Check. Intriguing McMenaminsy menu rather better read than tasted? Check and check.
Most summer barbecue evenings, there’s a negligible distinction between Hedge House and the ordinary neighborhood residence, save most Division homes feature beers beyond Lompoc’s brews (Hedge House is part of the Lompoc mini-chain of pubs in Portland).
Hours: 11:30am-11:00pm Sunday and Monday, 11:30am-midnight Tuesday-Saturday.
$3.25 pints 4-6pm Mondays and Wed-Friday and all day Sunday.
Mondays: Trivia competition (8pm, no cover, big winner gets a gift certificate for any of the Lompoc bars).
Tuesdays: Tightwad Tuesdays with $2.50 pints all hours
Thursdays: Ladies Night $3 pints, $2 off wine by the glass

I visit Portland from Utah at least once a year and my first stop is the Hedge House. Great atmosphere, food and staff.
We had a very bad experience here and will never go back.
We went in and the place was practically empty. My wife went to where there is a sign saying to put your name on a waiting list, but someone behind the bar (it turned out to be the dishwasher) said go ahead and sit where you like. The waitress knew we were there. I looked over once to see what was taking so long, after some tables were waited on who came in after us, and I got an angry glare from the waitress. So we went up to the sign up sheet, and the waitress started giving my wife a hard time. My wife told here that the "bartender" said to go ahead and sit, but she was told in a very snippy tone that there is no bartender. So my wife said, wryly, that someone was behind the bar. The waitress continued to argue with her even after she walked away. I was like, I'm Audi, and went out to unlock the bikes, but my wife didn't follow me, insisting that she wanted an Old Lompoc. When I went back in, it turned out the waitress went to the table and told my wife to leave.
Your mileage may vary. It was probably just personal between this waitress and my wife, but the fact that they allow this to go on in their establishment sheds a very negative light on them, for me.
Frankly, I think a waitress is in the business of dealing with people and ought to know how to deal with miscommunications regarding the seating policy. And frankly, it's the customers, ultimately, who pay the wages, so they ought to do it with some sense of grace.
But if you think it's OK for a waitress to basically imply that a woman twice her age is a liar, and then to refuse to serve her because she doesn't like being called a liar, this is the place for you.
I stopped going there after I waited 2.5 hours for a table that would be "ready in 30 minutes". The beer is fantastic, the food is mediocre on a good day, and the service is, at best, unpredictable, at worst, criminal. If you want Lompoc's amazing beer, definitely go to Fifth Quadrant instead. The food & service are MUCH better and you can get a table the same day you arrived.
Hedge House is cool, true, and the beer is quite excellent, true, but leave your beloved growler at home. When I went there yesterday to fill it, they informed me that they do not offer that service, as the growler won't fit under the taps. They do fill mason jars, but I left all of mine back in Kentucky with my sister wife and moonshine still. I have to say, although I am may sound angry and bitter, the staff member that helped me, was anything but.
The Hedge House is a Steeler's bar on game days, with games on the backporch via flatscreen tv on the side of the house. It's a great time, complete with Pittsburgh themed foods (homemade pierogies, Primanti's style sandwiches, etc.)
This place is geographically our neighborhood bar and are we lucky! Good beer at good prices, nice ambiance, and if you avoid Tuesdays and Fri-Sat evenings you'll have no trouble getting a table. If you're vegan, don't bother with food. Maybe chips and salsa - pretty good salsa.
Man, this place is so cool, and they have good vegetarian food too. Only complaint would be I have been there three times, and the last two after waiting over 20 miutes for a table, never was able to get one. But, i was drinking when i was waiting, so what the hell. Get there early, and have time to wait.
This is such a perfect place to hang on the patio in the summer, or cozy up in a booth in the winter. The food is above average in variety and quality for your neighborhood bar. Service can be slow when it gets busy, and be prepared to wait for a table on hot nights like Tuesday ($2 pints) or Friday.
I also really loved the C-Note. Our server was top-notch, once he got around to coming to our table.
This place is great during the summer and the menu is quite good. But the beer is fantastic and quite cheap on Tuesday and weekends. C-note rocks.
