BarFly's Review of Expatriate
Located directly across from foodie favorite Beast, Expatriate initially offers no sign or any indication that it is an open and operating bar. We wandered up and down 30th Avenue, following the little blue dot on the GPS for far too long until we discovered that the building with the flags in the window was our destination. The interior is one small room, with Asian accoutrements lining the walls. Famous chef Naomi Pomeroy can occasionally be seen in the kitchen window, preparing the bar's few offerings, while husband Kyle Webster is behind the bar personally crafting each cocktail and delivering the small plates all the while supplying the music from his groovy vinyl collection on a small turntable behind the bar.
The menu is concise and focused, and all 6 of the $10 specialty drinks have an origin story. Food is pan-Asian for the most part, save the much-ballyhooed $4 "James Beard's Onion and Butter Sandwich." Definitely toes the line of being overly pretentious, but manages to escape thanks t the relaxed and attentive customer service. Sexy spot to take a date, or yourself on pay day. For those of us on a meager budget, it's probably the closest we'll ever come to dining at Beast.
