BarFly's Review of Casa del Matador
No, this is not the legendary Matador on West Burnside. I repeat, it is not The Matador.
Corporate manufactured authentism for the suburban set, (though the decor is, admittably, cool=), and you will find decent happy hour eats snacks if one is forced to eat there after your companie's latest team building exercise. Still, it's a dick move to come into our town and build a place called the Matador right down the street from, the Matador.
For exactly the same thing onling across the road, see Casa Del Matador on East Burnside,

Getting to Casa del Matador

I actually had a great time at Casa del Matador last weekend and had great service, food, and drinks. I go out a lot downtown and am so sick of all the pretentious bs places that have popped up, but this place really seems to strive to do it right.
I will fo sho try it again.
What a joke. Went for happy hour, not so happy. Got there at 4:30 and ordered a beer. 15 minutes later I got. The waitress said sorry I'm slammed.(4 tables?) Ordered food and it arrived in 30 minutes. Waited for tab another 30 minutes(just to get it). Put money in it and waited another 15 minutes before change was distributed. Here is the reason. 1 waiter, 1 waitress both are bartenders and food runners, and bussers, and perhaps cooks(did not look in back) My advice, order food and water only and do not tip if you have to wait an hour and half for a simple meal. It's quicker to go to the store and cook it then to have to deal with this poor excuse of a restaurant.
Have been here a few times, and the food is good. However, the wait staff and bar tenders suffer from the typical Portland food service employee attitude problems. They'll stand in front of you making small-talk with their buds for five minutes while you're waiting for them to get your flipping chips and salsa. Oh, and now you have to pay for your C&S, even if you order dinner. I won't be going back to CdM.
Attractiveness does not equal good service. For the most part, most of the waiters/waitresses were hired before this placee opened last summer and obviously, experience was not a qualification. Most people that work there are attractive 20 somethings but they are aweful servers. Of the four times that I've been there, the service has been good...never! After waiting 15 minutes for a beer(A SINGLE BEER!), I went up to the bar tender to grab it because I saw it sitting at the bar for 5 minutes. The bartender hooked up a second beer on the house but it still didn't make up for the 1/4 of an hour that I was forced to remain sober.
The price performance on HH food is the best in the metro area, aside from the $2 menu at McFaddens.
It wouldn't take too much to make this place one of the best bars in Portland; fire the wait staff and find people that are actually good at their job.
We went to Casa del Matador for a friend's birthday and had a very bad experience. The waitress was absent nearly the entire evening. We would have to go fetch her and most often found her flirting with the manager somewhere near the kitchen. Our food came out luke warm at best. Our cocktails, as others have commented, were basically ice with a splash of flavored water. Not worth wasting an evening - try somewhere else.
The happy hour nachos are a pretty good deal, their draft beer is water down rubbish. Nice location and good crowed, but a shame they are messing with the drinks.
I took my 68-year-old mom here for happy hour. She loved the food, but complained that there was no tequila in her $8 margarita!
This was my second time. The first time my friends and I had the same complaint. Three margaritas and we were all stone cold sober. They must make up for the cheap food by holding back on the liquor.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Never again.
happy hour food is tasty and decently priced for the 23rd area... 2 happy hours, one is late night, so a nice alternative to the other food places in that part of town late night. cool metalwork decor, if not trying a bit too hard, comes across as a consistent effort and every time i walk by its busy. good sign.
