BarFly's Review of Bridgeport Brew Pub
Bridgeport's homebase is practically unrecognizable, since it morphed its pleasantly shabby old tasting room into a veritable beer clinic of cathedral-like proportions. Lifeless ambience bestowed by industrial chic decor so clean and cold, it's sterile.
Devout hopheads may enjoy worship at the steel & white marble "beer altar," or a tour of the brewery, but the soulless quality of the space doesn't inspire repeat visits.

I have to disagree with a lot of the recent negative reviews about Bridgeport, perhaps because I am not familiar with the old version. My hopes and dreams have not been shattered by a remodeling job, but that's just me. First of all, I am writing this review in favor of Bridgeport's Happy Hour. BP is one of the few places in the Pearl (or anywhere in Portland, from my limited experience) that actually discounts both food and beer during happy hour. In my opinion, Bridgeport is in the top three, if not the best, Portland brewery. This place has three casks, which is critical. All the whining about the downstairs "bar" is pointless. If you want the bar, go upstairs to the bar and drink there. All of this whining about "Oh, the Pearl District has become so lame. What happened to all the great Pearl District spots? Why can't things be the way they used to be?" Shut up, whiners. Last I checked, the Pearl District used to be a bunch of homeless people pissing and $hitting everywhere and a bunch of run-down, abandoned buildings. I personally like to go to nice places that aren't filled with smoke, idiots, and old men holding their heads in their hand while they nurse the last shot their pawned-off watch could buy them. Anyway: very, very decent happy hour here at Bridgeport. If you're rolling here to seriously drink some beers, go at night when normal people get drunk. During the day, they are trying to make the brewery more family friendly, which, if you'd pull your head out of your a$$ for 2 seconds, you'd realize is a good thing: bringing quality, locally made beer into the local mainstream. $$ makes the world go 'round, whiners. If you don't like it, move to Cuba.
Yeah, so the 4 beer max is B.S. I think that the manager is on some weird power trip, cause the less experienced staff are friendly, and get this: actually serve beer to people who drink! the fact that the pints are 20 oz doesn't make up for bursting my buzz at the beginning.
After a business lunch that spanned a few hours, the evening waiter announced a 4 beer house policy and effectively cut our party off!!! We were having a great time, unoffensive to nobody, only to be shamed into leaving!! What is wrong with this place? Then, one of our party ordered from the bar, and the waiter had the audacity to literally take his beer from him. Who are these people??? My hunch is they are dying out from the competition with their superior competitors.
We definitely will NOT be returning!
i wandered by one afternoon craving one of my favorite snacks, a porter and some fries. the porter was decent at best and the plate of fries was good, but way too big and 6$+ if you cant get beer and fries for less than 10$, youre getting ripped off in my book.
I come out here once a year and the Former restaurant was my favorite. I am really sad (angry even) that they screwed this place up and ruined it. Man, I am bummed. I agree that they sold out
I don't know what Bridegport was thinking when they did this crappy Pearl-izer remodel, but they RUINED IT!!!! Gone is the good pizza and cozy atmosphere. You can't even order pizza by the slice! The noise level is intolerable. Both times I've been there I've come home hoarse from yelling. I miss the old building and the beer loading dock... unfortunately it is just a memory now.
This place used to be such an inviting place to grab a beer and a slice of pizza. It used to be one of my favorite drinking spots. But those are just memories now that Bridgeport has reopened as a lame pseudo-classy bakery & brewery. For some reason the beer doesn't even taste as good. The phrase "sellout" is a perfect description of this place, and unfortunately, I will not be going there again. Other local brewpubs are much more inviting with better beer and food.
I went there last night for the first time since the remodel. I think they ruined the place. The food was OK but the ambiance is gone. I won't be going back.
Quite possibly the worst happy hour I have ever had. The food which was supposed to be hot literally came on a cold salad plate. Food was almost frozen. Very, very, very small portions. Don't plan on eating here - just drinking!
We used to LOVE Bridgeport. Now it is just a Gordon Biersch (however you spell it) type of place. they did ruin the pizza and the whole atmosphere. The beer is still of their normal quality but the wholeplace reeks of sell-out. So much for the lovely old Bridgeport RIP to our Ivy covered hangout of days past
After eagerly awaiting Bridgeport's re-opening, I was very let down. I could almost taste the delicious sourdough pizza that went so well with their excellent beers.
What I got was an updated Pearl Districtor's idea of a pub. They claim they are fostering relationships w/ the seating. Yes, if shouting over your dinner is a relationship.
The big old brick pizza oven and great pizza is gone in favor of a thin styrofoam pizza crust baked in a crappy electric wall oven. YAWN. Salads meh, appetizer cheese dip (a staple) was OK, much smaller than it used to be, and the bread served with it was so so, especially considering all the ballyhooing about the on premises bakery.
Go here for one reason-- beers! Lots of beers in several rooms, although the upstairs bar looks a helluva lot like the downstairs one plus some TV sets. The quiet room was booked for a banquet when we were in. Service was good, nice new girl from Vermont who listened to be kvetch about the pizza stinking with a smile. She brought me beers promptly enough, and that's not always the norm everywhere.
If you want great pizza, go to Apizza Scholls. If you want to hang out in a loud bar with no real atmosphere (new Pearl District fit in style ain't atmosphere-- the old place, that had atmosphere) then take your out of town friends here for beers.
