BarFly's Review of BC's American Saloon
What used to be a classic car/Klingon bar has transformed into a hipster honkey tonk hangout. An improvement? Hard to say.Still though, the place is quite big, and makes a nice drink served by an amicable staff.

BC's has been under new management for a couple of years, and no longer is a honkey-tonk hangout. It's become the Techno center of South East Portland, with two of the best parties in town, and talent from San Francisco, Seattle, and LA playing regularly - for free!
First Friday of the month is Static, put on by Subsensory Records. They've been running their party for almost a year and a half, and have a loyal crowd of regulars that supports their rotating lineup of DJs. This is Portland's best techno night.
Fourth friday of the month is Flash, hosted by Nude Photo Music - another local dance music label. Featuring djs and live performers from the label, its been running for 5mos, and getting more and more popular. Great night to catch some deep techno, tech-house, deep house, and minimal from world-class DJs and producers that are getting a lot of attention world-wide.
Obviously - if you don't like techno or house, you're not going to like these nights. No hip hop, no pop - just dance music. But if that's what you're looking for, both nights are great.
Let's not forget the lovely bartender, Faith, makes some mean cocktails for cheap, and Jorge cooks up some delicious tacos in the kitchen!
Disclosure - I'm the promoter for Flash, and run the label Nude Photo Music.
I love Fridays at BCs, except the smoke. The music is f***ing great though, I love the dubstep and DnB nights. UndaDawgs Crew keeps it tight!!!! Check it out if you're into electronic music. BC's Fridays.
My buddy started Pulp Friction on Friday nights and I must say its taken a while to grow, but it has! The music is good. Great sound system and good price on well drinks. I still think there needs to be more specials, but I don't think the owner wants to hear it. I used to book one night a month and Bcs (for DnB) and the place would get so packed that you could not breath. So...if you don't like electronic music and a bunch of smoke then I would avoid this place. Fridays go off. I don't usually go there any other days, but I am sure people are trying to do things there other nights!
edit: Now usually every Fri its packed.
BC's is under new ownership and is no longer a country bar!! Happy Hour 5-7, food and drink specials.
Tue: Karaoke Wed: MonkeyZero DJ's+belly dancers+ladies night Thur: DJ Audio Fri: Pulp Friction Sun: FREE Texas Hold'm
Think middle class neighborhood club and bar.
My name IS Devin. I'm a patron and one of the Wed DJs. Not trying to be a shill, just wanted to update the venue info.
this might sound strange but m looking for someone who might have worked at the bar a few months ago, her name was leah and she had brown eyes, about 5'6'', possibly a server bartender. if you know of whom i speak, please let me know because ive been trying to reach her for some time. thanks, email@example.com
just quite didn't get the pieces together, but better than most bars in inner southeast by far
Though we sank our heart and soul into that bar, BC's is closed now. Thanks for your support. Go to www.myspace.com/bcsamericansaloon to get the scoop and read all the awesome comments from our supporters - national bands, regulars, etc. viva la honky tonk!! Aly Star, Booker.
Marvin? Here's the real scoop: When I was there, the waitresses there were energetic and friendly. The whiskey was strong, the beer was cold, and the Chicken Strips were GREAT. I got to hang and play music with some friends I hadn't seen in a while...we had a blast. I have a number of friends who play at BC's on a regular basis. Those are some plusses. I'll not get involved in bashing a place where my friends play, personal opinions aside.
Ha! That's where I saw the term. I had to look it up. I started driving a truck after 9th grade, so to me that's a ten dollar word. I don't live around there, but next time I pass through let's hook up and have a cold one...on me.
I really like this place. I like it because it feels like a real, modern day Honky Tonk. That's right, like you'd expect to find in the South Carolina backwoods, or, God forbid, Beaverton without the threat of attack (though I have witnessed a couple of ass-whoopings in the parking lot). Complete with authentic blue-collar working types pecking away at the touch-screen video games mounted on the bar and enough smoke to gag the regulars at Hal's, BC's doesn't have the contrived air of the Duff's manufactured "Daddy-O" or Sabala's white-trash chic (bars in which I've invested heavily by the way). BC's is where I go to get away from Portland's hipper-than-thou ubiquity and still hang out with folks under 65. So what if it used to cater to Disco dancing Klingons (did I really just write that?). Where else would you hear Molly Hatchet, 2 Live Crew and Lucinda Williams from one DJ? Where else would you want to?
hmm.. that term 'pseudo honky tonk' sounds strangely familiar..a comment left on Duff's myspace site?? way to be anonymous, "Marvin"..

Best of places to play in Portland. Musicians always feel welcome at Duff's. There are other new places...psuedo Honky Tonks...don't be fooled.
Aplace for psuedo honky tonk posers. It takes more than a John Wayne cut out standing in the corner to make a place a real Honky Tonk. They used to do Klingon Karaoke, and will do whatever they need to make a buck...if this doesn't fly...and I don't think it will, they'll be into something else...a flavor of the month.
