BarFly's Review of Apex
Only in Portland could one gripe that a bar with nearly 50 taps doesn’t rotate them often enough. But there it is.
Otherwise Apex is cool enough on all counts, with a spacious patio (although the view of Division isn’t exactly romantic), a long bar that people will presumably actually sit at come winter, and a symbiotic relationship with next-door taqueria Los Gorditos, which will delivers to the patio (or at least as far as the railing).
Nice touches include a clipboard on the wall to note problems with the four pinball machines, an easy-to-read HDTV beer menu (which spares you the withering contempt of the none-too-hospitable servers), and cubbies for bike and motorcycle helmets. Speaking of which, they tend to play bike and motorcycle races at high volume on the TVs, which is awesome if you’re into that, and less so if you’re not.
Cash only, but they’ll give you a dollar off a beer if you show your receipt from the ATM.

They advertised a screening of the Mars Rover landing, by flyers and twitter. We asked politely for the station to be changed to that, which got us only nasty remarks from the bartender -- who, moreover, went and complained to the next people over about us. Most of the people at the bar were there to see the Mars landing. Bartender was extremely curt and rude to us even before this. Walked off while I was asking about a beer. I'm generally nice to servers and happy with service; you won't hear me complain much. But this was, by far, the worst service I've ever experienced.
My friends went to chill and grab some early evening beers. We accidentally brought in a sprite because we bought los gorditos from next door. The "bouncer" snatched the drink out from my hand while we were seated without telling me anything and immediately threw it away. Probably one of the rudest act in service I've ever seen. I recommend that employee be let go.
I went there because barfly gave it a "sports" label. The TV was off so we asked them to turn on the basketball game and the bartender said "sorry, the owner won't let me." so I'm going to assume this is NOT a sports bar.
Otherwise, great beer selection. Unfortunately, we didn't get to experience it.
Just learned about APEX and now have been there four times. This is my new favorite beer stop. Portland feel-at-home vibe with an amazingly varied beer selection (and, given that, 3 or 4 beers from Russian River, which says a lot!). Nicest, chill staff, willing to recommend (or not) a particular beer. And they know their beer!
The beer selection here is awesome. I'm hoping they can cover some of the outdoor seating & add heaters for wintertime. They have discontinued the ATM discount. The beer menu screen is great, but could use another column indicating type of beer.
