I visit Portland at least once a year, and the ONLY reason I've stayed at the Hilton was Alexander's. Imagine my dissapointment last month when the elevator doors open up to...nothing. Empty. Gone. What complete idiots these so called new managers are. All they've "managed" to do is lose customers...I'll never stay there again. It started going downhill after Chris left. Where is he now??
No the Jazz has not stopped. It is still going on every night that they're open. It has been non-smoking for over a year now, though I see that you (Tony) made this observation quite recently. Where have you been? And yeah, Chris is gone which is one of the lamest injustices in the service industry here in the Rose City. Chris' sidekick Judith of 5 years has now taken his place. She's almost as cool. There has always been plenty of geezers but jazz does have quite a few young followers. A lot of the musicians are fairly young. Overpriced? Of course. It's the Hilton. Outdated? Hell yeah. The brass needed to go 20 years ago. But really, can we all be as hip as Tony?
Alexander's is no longer worth your time. They stopped the cool 1940's-1950's jazz muisc, went non-smoking, and super bartender Chris is gone. He really made this place. Now is it just an overpriced lounge filled with AARP members. Go elsewhere.
